During the Cuban Missile Problems, U.S. President John F. Kennedy institutes a blockade to halt a Soviet freighter from moving the atomic rockets to Cuba. Shaw, sporting a helmet that foils Xavier's telepathy, comes with the Soviet navy to guarantee the rockets arrive, trying to set off World Conflict III and gain mutant ascendency. Raven goes to seduce Lensherr, who coerces her to embrace her nature as a mutant. Later, McCoy offers Raven his remedy for her visual appeal, but she declines. The remedy backfires on McCoy, making him a leonine creature. Though ashamed of his new visual appeal, he pilots the mutants and MacTaggert to the blockade line. In an ensuing struggle with Shaw, Lensherr takes the helmet for himself, allowing Xavier to immobilize Shaw. Regardless of Xavier's objections, Lensherr eliminates Shaw by making the concentration camp coin by way of his brain. Fearing the mutants, the fleets fireplace their rockets at them. In a combat, Xavier maintains Lensherr from ruining the fleets with the rockets, but when MacTaggert fires at Lensherr, a deflected bullet strikes Xavier in the spinal column.
